Episode 07 — The Ingredients: Assets, Indexes & Risk
Duration: 15:41 minutes
Before you can build the portfolio, you need to understand what you are building it with.
Episode Overview
Duration: 15:41 minutes
We have chosen passive investing. Now it is time to understand what we are actually investing in. In this episode, I walk through the five core asset classes — equities, fixed income, real estate, commodities, and alternatives — explaining what each one is, what role it plays in a portfolio, and what level of risk it carries. I also explain what an index actually is and why that distinction matters before we start choosing funds. Think of this as the nutritional knowledge before the meal plan. The recipe comes next — but first, the ingredients.
What You'll Learn
- What an asset is and why not all assets carry the same risk
- What an index measures — and what it cannot do
- The five core asset classes and the role each plays in a portfolio
- Why equities are the engine of long-term growth — and why volatility is the price
- How time changes the risk profile of every asset class
Key Takeaways
Assets work for you
Every asset class has the potential to grow or generate income — but each carries its own risk profile.
Indexes measure, funds invest
An index is not something you buy. It is a measurement. The fund is the vehicle that follows it.
Time changes everything
An 18-year runway allows you to absorb volatility and let equities do their work. A 3-year runway is a very different conversation.

An overview of what’s covered in this episode.
In the last episode, I made the case for passive investing — and the evidence was clear. Now the question changes. Knowing you want to own the market is one thing. Knowing what the market is actually made of is another. In this episode, I lay out the ingredients before the recipe.
What Is an Asset?
I start with the foundation: an asset is anything that has value and the potential to generate a return. A share, a bond, a property, a commodity. The key word is potential — assets carry risk, and understanding that risk for each type is what allows you to build a portfolio with intention rather than guesswork.
What Is an Index?
Before meeting the asset classes, I clarify something that trips up many investors. An index is not an asset you can buy. It is a measurement — a list of assets grouped together to represent a market. The S&P 500 measures the 500 largest US companies. The MSCI World measures large and mid-sized companies across 23 developed countries. Indexes tell you how a market is performing. Funds are what allow you to follow them.
The Five Asset Classes
I walk through each of the five core building blocks of a portfolio. Equities are ownership in companies — the highest long-term return potential, and the highest short-term volatility. Over an 18-year timeline, history consistently shows that diversified equity markets trend upward. Volatility is the price you pay for the strongest results.
Fixed income — government and corporate bonds — are loans that pay regular interest. Lower risk, lower return, but they act as a stabiliser when equities fall. Real estate provides steady income and long-term value, but is illiquid and capital-intensive. Commodities like gold, oil, and copper diversify a portfolio but generate no income and are driven by forces almost impossible to predict. And alternative assets — art, collectibles, rare assets — are uncorrelated to financial markets but require expertise and carry significant illiquidity.
Why This Matters Before Choosing a Fund
When you choose a fund, you are choosing which asset classes it contains, in what proportion, and at what level of risk. I explain why understanding these five classes is the essential step before making that choice — and why an 18-year runway for your child changes the entire risk conversation.
Listen to the full episode to hear each asset class explained simply, with no jargon and no product recommendations — just the ingredients, clearly laid out, before the recipe begins.
